AZEK is the advanced PVC line from TimberTech, and it is the deck surface we recommend when heat and moisture are the deciding factors rather than budget. It is not composite — that difference is the whole point of the product, and it is why it behaves the way it does in a Florida summer.
Composite decking is wood flour bound in plastic, usually with a protective cap. AZEK boards contain no wood flour at all. Because there is no organic material in the board, there is nothing for mould, mildew or insects to feed on, and nothing to absorb water and swell. On a lot with poor airflow under the deck, or on the marsh side of the Intracoastal, that is a structural advantage rather than a marketing line.
The absence of wood filler also makes the boards lighter than comparable composite, and it is a large part of why they run cooler.
TimberTech rates light colours in its Advanced PVC by AZEK range to stay up to 30°F cooler to the touch than competing products, with heat-mitigation technology built into the board. In practice that is the gap between a pool deck you can walk barefoot at 3pm in July and one you sprint across.
The caveat we give every customer: that figure is for light colours. A dark AZEK board in direct sun is still hot. If bare feet at midday are the priority, the colour you choose will do more for you than the brand you choose. We will show you the light end of the range first.
TimberTech AZEK boards carry a Lifetime Limited Product Warranty together with a 50-Year Limited Fade and Stain Warranty — the strongest cover of any decking line we install. For comparison, TimberTech's composite lines carry a 30-year warranty.
As with any manufacturer warranty, it covers the board and not the structure underneath. Framing, ledger and flashing are where Florida decks fail, and they are our responsibility, not the board maker's.

On a shaded, elevated deck, often not — a good capped composite will serve you well for less. On a pool deck in full sun, on a marsh-side lot, or anywhere the deck sits close to grade, the heat and moisture advantages are real and the lifetime warranty is meaningful. We will tell you which situation you are in rather than defaulting to the dearer board.
The boards are textured and grip well when clean. What makes any deck slick is the biological film that grows in shade and humidity. Keep the gaps clear, keep airflow under the deck, and wash it twice a year. That prevents nearly every slip issue we get called about, on any material.
Sometimes, and only after we inspect it. Joist spacing has to suit the board, and the ledger and framing have to be sound with no rot. It is a false economy to put a lifetime-warranted surface on a frame with five years left in it, and we will say so if that is what we find.
Yes. AZEK is the advanced PVC line within the TimberTech range — the same manufacturer, sold as TimberTech AZEK. TimberTech's other lines are capped composite. When people compare AZEK with TimberTech they are usually comparing PVC with composite.
PVC does move with temperature, which is why gapping and fastening have to follow the manufacturer's spec rather than a rule of thumb. Get that right at installation and it is a non-issue. Get it wrong and you see buckling, which is an installer problem, not a product problem.
