Timber: Pressure-treated timber retaining walls are the most affordable option for short walls under three feet. They work well for garden bed borders and minor grade transitions. However, wood deteriorates in Florida’s humid climate faster than masonry options, and timber walls typically need replacement within 10 to 15 years. We generally recommend masonry over timber for any wall that needs to last.

Engineering and Structural Requirements

Not all retaining walls are simple stack-and-go projects. Walls over four feet tall in Clay County typically require engineered drawings from a licensed structural engineer. This isn’t optional; it’s a building code requirement that exists because taller walls must resist substantial lateral earth pressure, and a failure can cause serious property damage or safety hazards.

Even for shorter walls, proper engineering practices matter. Every retaining wall we build includes compacted gravel backfill behind the wall for drainage, perforated drain pipe at the base to channel water away, and geogrid reinforcement for walls that exceed certain height thresholds.
